lyrics

On the cobbled streets of Croydon towne
The accordion player stands
He plays an old accordion
With his accordion-playing hands

No-one knows where he is from
No-one knows his name
But everyone knows the tune he plays
For it is always the same...

His playing is extremely poor
People stare at him and laugh
He is considered a public nuisance
By the Whitgift Centre staff

But one evening as he packed his things to leave
Curiosity got the better of me
I followed the accordionist home
He left his front door ajar behind him
And up woodworm stairway winding
I followed, crept outside his door and listened
But the accordionist was not alone...

A little voice sang

Squeeze me!
Come on, it's easy!
Don't look so queasy
Just pull and push my bellows out and in
For though you'd best like to escape me
You can hide, but you can't run
From the old enchanted taunting
Of the curs'd accordion

I fled home running faster
Than I'd ever run before
Pondering the nature
Of that voice behind the door

But the very next day, as I walked through town
Standing in his usual place
The accordionist played the accordion
With his accordion-playing face...

His playing was as poor as ever
He had not worked on his technique
But as I ventured closer
I swore a little voice did speak

And it said

Squeeze me!
Come on, it's easy!
Don't look so queasy
Just pull and push my bellows out and in
And if you play the tune I teach you
Then the people all will come
They will pay to hear the music
Of the curs'd accordium

I found myself following the accordionist home every day
And listening outside his door to the words the accordion would say
The taunting would continue
Though the accordionist would resist
He refused to play the magic tune
Though the accordion would insist

Then one day the voices fell silent
I softly opened the door
The accordionist lay DEAD
Beside the accordion on the floor

Something drew me closer
I took the accordion in my hands
And now on the cobbled Croydon streets
I myself do stand

And I sing

Squeeze me!
Come on it's easy!
Don't look so queasy
Just pull and push my bellows out and in
And if you play the tune I teach you
Then the people all will come
They will pay to hear the music
Of the curs'd accordium

Squeeze me!
Come on it's easy!
Don't look so queasy
Just pull and push my bellows out and in
And when you hear the accordion in Croydon
Then you don't have me to thank
Thank the old enchanted taunting
Of the curs'd accordiank!
